LETTER OF APPEAL 2008;
We’re starting a hostel!
In June 2009 a hostel will open on Deer Isle, ME and with this letter we want to put out a humble request for your help along the way.
During 2008, we’re working on the building, a timber framed house replicating a garrison style house from the 17th century, still standing in Massachusetts. It’s built in line with the principles of natural building, as well as to meet the needs of a hostel.
The work is being performed with hand-tools, practicing techniques common to the sixteen hundreds. All the wood, as well as the granite for the stone cellar, has been gathered locally.
We are paying as we go. The land is fully paid for, as is building construction to date. We are blessed with many kind helpers, passing on whatever they can spare, such as timber, beds, wood-stoves and household necessities. Some contribute with their skills and knowledge, including blacksmithing and woodworking techniques.
In 2006 we received a $10.000 grant from Builders Without Borders, an international organization promoting natural building.
The time has come when we’re running out of money. To proceed with the building, we need financial help. The donations will cover the remaining building materials, with the two biggest expenses being the roof and the windows. The money will also be used for the start up costs and our very frugal living. We estimate our financial need for 2008 to be $29.000.
Your contribution will make this hostel possible and it will bring joy and benefit to many for a long time. To make a donation, send us a payable check or send the money via our PayPal (www.paypal.com) account to deerislehostel@hotmail.com.
If you have any further questions or wish to see our budget, please contact us. Any amount, small or large, will make a difference. And we’ll be grateful beyond words.

An overland journey
I year ago I traveled over land from Libya up through the Middle East and the Balkans to my childhood home in the north of Sweden. The trip was planned while still living in the States, and I could hear my friends whisper about the suicidal-Swede, she who would be bombed to pieces before getting out of the first country. For many,
this was something new, that these areas could be traveling destinations. That’s how the idea about the mailing list was born; I gathered all my friends’, and the skeptics’, addresses, and from the sand seas in Libya, the promenades in Beirut, mountains of
Turkey and trains through Serbia and Rumania I wrote email that reached a good 100s’ of readers and got passed on far out of my reach.
After coming home I turned them into vocal recordings that got broadcasted over the Swedish Public Radio and now, now I've translated those into English and recoded a CD with 12 every day vagabond life stories from these misunderstood parts of the world.
The booklet is handfolded and printed with a handpress by A Revolutionary Press.
The CD's are out for sale, the price works on a sliding scale between $15-$25. The money will go straight into the Deer Isle Hostel, an other way to build bridges between people in hope for a more fearless world.
To purchase one and also make a contribution to the Hostel, please send a payable check to

The word needs to be put out there; the Middle East is more than suicide bombers and fanatic Muslims. Balkan is more than a former war-zone.
We shouldn’t trust what we hear, and should question what we know. The world isn’t as distance as it might seem.
